I can't believe, with all the relatively obscure titles that have gotten CD releases over the last ten years, that SOS TITANIC has been neglected. Howard Blake's score is stuffed with tremendous melodies. Even the in-story "source" music is beautiful.

Add to that, the Titanic name all by itself will spur collector interest from people who never even saw the film. But the greatness of the music itself is the main point.

Someone should get off the dime and produce a CD.

If it were released without reference to the word "Titanic," someone might actually listen to it.

I would buy this in a heartbeat! As a kid, I actually taped the opening and end credits off of one of the endless showings TBS used to have in the late 80s/early 90s. The theme has been stuck in my head ever since.

The fact that the music elements are controlled by StudioCanal probably has a lot to do with the lack of a release, since none of the domestic specialty labels seems to have a relationship with that Paris-based organization. Perhaps the new Quartet Records ("Santa Claus", et al), which seems to have access to the EMI catalog, might be a candidate, since the film was an EMI production. Although now that I think of It, Kritzerland did release "Cross of Iron", which was on EMI.

Thanks for that, Bob. I wish our CD labels were less timid out initiating new relationships. Just call them up and ask about music rights. What's the worst that could happen?

"Less timid"? Jeez! The specialty labels have been fighting for DECADES to establish relationships we thought they'd never have. The amount of releases -from either bigger or smaller films- we have nowadays is astounding. Keep in mind that film music will ALWAYS be a niche market and some releases might just not be feasible.

I appreciate what you're saying. But a widely-seen film, drenched in really good music, with TITANIC in the title, should be a natural. I'm sure the CD would sell out.

Here we are a year later and still no CD.

I can't remember what title it was, but didn't one of our film music labels release a Studio Canal-owned soundtrack recently? Is that a ray of hope?

From StudioCanal, we had Intrada release "First Blood."

Not to mention Link and Cliffhanger, both being StudioCanal properties.

Wanna go plug in a request for this over at the Intrada boards? I'd buy any Titanic related soundtrack. Howard Blake, Lennie Niehaus, James Horner... I want all of 'em! FSM Board: SOS TITANIC - Howard Blake (73)

It sounds like Intrada's our man. I can't reiterate enough how good this score is. It's not just melodic, it's got several great melodies, wonderfully realized and played. Lots of power and beauty.

Wanna go plug in a request for this over at the Intrada boards?

I'm not registered over there yet, but... yeah. I'm doing it.

Silva Screen recently released music from the two 60s Doctor Who movies, which are owned by Studio Canal.

It may have been "widely-seen," but it is "widely-remembered"? That counts for something as well (just because you want it doesn't mean lots of other people do... as evidenced by how few posts this thread has after more than a year).

Still waiting. SOS TITANIC is a tremendous score, ripe for release, and we're in the 100th anniversary year of the actual event. How good does an idea have to be?

Fingers crossed.
