The old English Premier League tax at work - £50m for Amadou Onana but only Tottenham only get a promised £17m for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Marseille. Yes, Onana is younger but not much better. Players touted for £50m to Premier League clubs end up moving for a fraction of the price to Germany or Italy (Kostic, Bremner). While the asking price for Federico Chiesa and Jonathan David is £25m, expect it to be significantly higher if they move to the Premier League.

    Fletch, London

Regarding Aston Villa's deal for Amadou Onana and the message from Guy at 10:29 BST referring to it as being a steal - he is spot on, Everton have stolen £50m from Villa. I saw every game Onana played for Everton. He spent longer on the floor injured than he did contributing to the team effort. Great guy, it has to be said, but a very limited footballer for Everton who won’t be missed, I promise you.

Aston Villa's squad continues to take shape as manager Unai Emery bids to prepare a side capable of competing in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Villa finished fourth in the Premier League last term to qualify for Europe's elite competition for the first time since the 1982-83 season, the campaign after they won the European Cup.

The arrival of Amadou Onana in a £50m move from Everton has taken Villa's summer spending to about £140m.

They have also spent £35m on signing Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, £18.6m on the double signing of Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus, £18m on Jaden Philogene’s return from Hull, £5m on Ross Barkley's move from Luton and £9m on Lewis Dobbin's transfer from Everton.

Emery has had to balance those incomings with the departure of Douglas Luiz, who completed a £42.35m move to Italian side Juventus on a five year deal. Tim Iroegbunam, Omari Kellyman and Morgan Sanson have also left Villa Park and Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho has joined Vasco da Gama on a season-long loan.

The club's record signing Moussa Diaby has also been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

Amadou Onana made clear his ambition to play in Europe and work under Unai Emery were key to his £50m switch from Everton to Aston Villa.

“I’ll be playing in the Champions League again and that’s very exciting," said the 22-year-old Belgium midfielder, who played in Europe's top cup competition with previous club Lille.

"We also have a manager that’s one of the best in the business and I think he can take my game to the next level.”

Onana added that Villa midfielder and Belgium team-mate Youri Tielemans helped convince him to join the Midlands club.

“Youri played a big part in me being here because he told me lots of good stuff about the club,” said Onana.

Very good bit of business by Villa, Amadou Onana is a cracking young player who has Premier League and international experience at such a young age. £50m seems like a steal to me. From a jealous Arsenal fan.

Everton striker Beto says he needs to "have haters" and "people criticising me" in order to prove them wrong - and admits he struggled to adjust during his first season in England.

The 26-year-old joined the club from Udinese for £25m last summer, having scored 10 goals for the Serie A side the previous season.

The Portuguese frontman enjoyed a dream Toffees debut by scoring against Doncaster in the Carabao Cup in August but netted only four further goals.

"We need to understand one thing: football is simple," Beto told BBC Sport when asked whether criticism of him on social media is a motivation.

"We play football in our lives and they are working like eight- or 12-hour shifts and they come.

"Not everybody in this life is going to love you and not everybody in this life is going to hate you. In this sports life, for me, it's OK.

"Sometimes I like to read my comments when I played badly or missed chances. They will say 'Beto is [expletive] with missing chances'. But I like it because I say 'OK, I will make this guy shut his mouth.'

Surely Villa should sound out a potential move for Grealish to replace Diaby. With his game time at City already limited and Eze in Pep’s sights, it would make a great deal of sense.

Another long-running transfer was finally completed on Monday when Marseille signed Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham on an initial loan deal for the 2024-25 season.

The transfer includes what Spurs say, external is an "obligation that would see the move become permanent" for a fee believed to be about £17m.

Hojbjerg joined Tottenham in 2020 in a £15m deal from Southampton, when Jose Mourinho was in charge of the north London club.

He made 39 appearances last season but only 10 of those were starts as manager Ange Postecoglou favoured Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in central midfield.

Scotland forward Che Adams has joined Serie A side Torino on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old left Southampton at the end of last season after his contract expired.

He has signed a three-year deal with his new club.

Adams, who joined Southampton in 2019, helped Russell Martin's side to Premier League promotion last season by scoring 16 goals in the Championship.

The striker, who featured in all three of Scotland's Euro 2024 matches in Germany in June, turned down interest from clubs in the Premier League to join Torino.

The Italian club finished ninth in Serie A last season.

Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is a major doubt for the start of the season.

The 25-year-old Japan international was due to be part of the Gunners squad that travelled to the United States for their three-match tour.

Sadly, he suffered a knee injury just before departure.

Arsenal are still waiting to discover the full extent of the problem but sources have indicated Tomiyasu will not be fit for the opening Premier League game at home to Wolves on 17 August.

"It's unbelievable," said Arteta. "It happened this week.

"The kidworks so hard but he had an incident in training.

"We don't know theextent yet but we kept him there for precaution and we'll see whathappens."

Riccardo Calafiori is a 22-year-old Italy defender who plays for Serie A side Bologna.

Calafiori, who can play at centre-half or left-back, made his debut for the national team earlier this year and was one of Italy's standout players at Euro 2024, before they were knocked out in the last 16.

He made 30 Serie A appearances for Bologna last season and helped his side finish fifth in the Italian top flight, which was enough to earn qualification for the Champions League.

Arsenal had the best defence in the Premier League last season, conceding just 29 goals in 38 games.

Ben White, Gabriel and William Saliba were the most regular starters, with a number of different options tried at left-back, including Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior and Kieran Tierney.

Calafiori would add further options in the centre of defence, as well as on the left side, alongside fit-again Jurrien Timber.

What do you think Arsenal fans? Click thumbs up if you would be happy with the addition of Calafiori to your squad, or thumbs down if you don't.

Arsenal have a picturesque training base during their week-long stay in Los Angeles.

They are using the LA Rams' facility at Thousand Oaks, which is 35 miles from Beverly Hills.

However, the NFL side, owned by Stan Kroenke, who also owns the Gunners, moved training bases themselves this summer, to Woodland Hills, which is 15 miles away.

So Arsenal will be the last team to train at Thousand Oaks.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta understandably had mixed feelings when it came to the Euros final.

As a proud Spaniard, he was naturally delighted at the outcome of the game in Berlin. But he also felt sad for Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale, who were part of the defeated England squad.

"It was a great moment for us to win it againwith this generation," he said.

"They really had to earn it in the last few years, to getthat belief.

"But at the same time I was also sad, because you love your players. Youwant the best for them and it was a tough moment."
